An Airbnb enquiry yesterday, got me thinking about the reality of running a small, accommodation business.

A guest asked if my Airbnb rate was the best I could offer for a weekend. For a two-night stay, booking directly with me is £100 cheaper.

I understand that Airbnb helps people discover places like Bailey Huts, and I’m grateful for the reach these platforms can provide. But the fees and restrictions around communicating about direct bookings can be challenging for a small, independent host.

And this is one of the reasons I put so much effort into marketing.

I’m constantly thinking about what to post next, how to reach new people and where my next booking will come from. Sometimes I even wake up in the middle of the night with another idea! 🙄

I genuinely enjoy creating content, but running a small business means it’s not always easy to switch off.

Thankfully, the effort does pay off. I receive bookings through Instagram, TikTok, my website, word of mouth and even ChatGPT.

If I’m honest, I’m struggling a little with overwhelm at the moment.

My head is full of ideas, there’s always something that needs doing, and sometimes I feel like I’m trying to do ten things at once, recognise that feeling ?🤔

So this is how I take a little time for myself.

Getting outside for a walk, whatever the weather, on my own, with a bit of time and space to clear my head.

There’s something about being out in nature that has such a wonderfully calming effect on me.

Everything around me is just getting on with life. The trees, the grass, the birds, the changing seasons. Nothing is rushing to get to the next thing. Everything just happens, one day at a time, one minute at a time, and it has no demands on me whatsoever!!!

And somehow, it all feels so wonderfully uncomplicated.

Which got me thinking… why do we humans make our lives so complicated?

Always rushing, planning, worrying about what’s next, feeling like we should be doing more, achieving more, being more.

Maybe sometimes we just need to stop, take a breath and remember that we’re allowed to take a step back, too.

I know I certainly need that reminder at the moment.

It turns out I don’t just run a luxury shepherd’s hut in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire. I’m also the cleaner, baker, gardener, florist, accountant, social media manager… and about 15 other people apparently! 🤣

Running a small business single handedly means wearing ALL the hats, from the not so glamorous jobs behind the scenes to the little touches that make a stay special.

Bailey Huts started as a dream, and every bit of it has been created with love, hard work and probably to many gin and tonics along the way! 🍸😂

So next time you stay, just remember… your host has probably been the entire workforce that day! 🤣

When people say, “Oh, you’ve got an Airbnb,” I want to say:

No. I have a holiday rental.

Airbnb is one of the platforms I use to advertise it on.

It’s like calling every vacuum cleaner a Hoover. 🤷‍♀️

I know it’s become the word everyone uses for a holiday rental, but it really does make me twitch a little every time I hear it. 🙄🙄🙄

I sometimes wonder if I’m doing Instagram wrong.

I can spend three hours putting something together on a Friday night, only for something I made in ten minutes to get more views.

And yes, it’s frustrating.

People have even said to me, “Why don’t you outsource your social media?”

But honestly, this is one thing I don’t want to outsource.

I’m a creative. I genuinely enjoy thinking of the idea, making it, filming it, editing it and sharing it.

I love sharing Bailey Huts. The garden, the things I make, cook and grow, the little details, the behind-the-scenes and the things my guests say.

Of course I’d love something to go viral, but I don’t want that to be the reason I create.

I want to keep sharing the little world I’ve created here, whether you ever come and stay or not.

Maybe that’s enough. 🤍
